La primera agrupación de médicos de las Neurociencias se denominó Sociedad Colombiana de Ciencias Neurológicas, cuyo impulsor y Presidente fundador fue el Dr. Alejandro Jiménez Arango, Secretario el Dr. Andrés Roselli y Tesorero el Dr. Salomón Hakim Dow.

Fue creada en el año 1.962 bajo el nombre de Sociedad Neurológica de Colombia, porque agrupaba neurólogos, neurocirujanos y médicos de especialidades afines a las Neurociencias.

La Primera Junta Directiva estuvo conformada por el Dr. Mario Camacho Pinto (Presidente), el Dr. José Mora Rubio (Vicepresidente), el Dr. Antonio Becerra Lara (Secretario), el Dr. Jaime Gómez González (Tesorero) y el Dr. Ignacio Vergara (Bibliotecario). El primer congreso fue organizado en el Hotel Tequendama en Julio de 1.965 con una nutrida participación de los especialistas en las Neurociencias.

Mediante la Resolución No. 001652 del 22 de marzo de 1.994 del Ministerio de Salud, en la ciudad de Bogotá, la Sociedad cambió de denominación por el de Asociación Colombiana de Neurocirugía.

Hasta el año 2012 ha realizado 24 Congresos Nacionales y 22 Simposios Internacionales, además de los eventos periódicos de las subespecialidades y ha celebrado los 50 años.

Sus socios son afiliados automáticamente a la Federación Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Neurocirugía FLANC y a la World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies WFNS.

Se extiende el certificado oficial que acredita como miembro activo de la Asociación Colombiana de Neurocirugía, requerido en la mayoría de instituciones académicas y asistenciales, como parte del proceso de Certificación y Recertificación, y acredita como Especialista en Columna a los miembros activos de la Asociación.
